Chapter Fourteen

Marshall couldn't believe how forgiving Latiesha was. Normally he could laugh off his daughter's ridiculous statements. But this was different. This involved feelings, and not just his own. He wasn't ready to love anyone yet. At least, that's what he told himself. As the day progressed and he watched Latiesha patiently play with Savannah, listen to her stories, and watch her favorite scene of Brave six times in a row, Marshall began to doubt his long-held mantra that women were nothing but trouble.

“Oh, there you are Marshall,” Jane said, coming into the living room where everyone was watching the football game. “I've just realized I forgot to bring Savannah's blankie for quiet time. You know she won't rest a bit without it.”

“And you're telling me this because?”

Jane smirked at him. “Do you really want to deal with a cranky toddler today?”

“No, but in case you've forgotten, I can't drive right now. My foot's in a boot, and not the kind I wear every day.”

“Oh, how silly. But I seem to have misplaced my glasses, and I really shouldn't drive without them. And Nick is out working Katie's foster horses right now. I hate to bother him since he does such great work.”

“What's the problem?” Latiesha asked, coming over.

Before Marshall could open his mouth to respond, his mother gushed, “Do you think you could drive Marshall back to our place? Savannah needs her blankie for quiet time and with everything going on, I just forgot it.”

Marshall closed his eyes so his mother wouldn't see them rolling. Forgot it, my foot! She's about as subtle as Savannah.

“Sure,” Latiesha said. “I can do that.” She turned to Marshall. “Do you need anything before we go?”

“Nothing you can help with,” he replied, glaring at his mother. Jane had the nerve to give him a sweet smile as she all but pushed them out the door. His scowl deepened and he mentally sent the message to her that they would be having a long talk later.

“Well, are you ready to go then?” Latiesha asked.

Marshall nodded and followed her outside to her car. As she started it, he said, “I'm sorry about this.”

Latiesha smiled. “Kids forget things all the time, it's not a big deal.”

“But it is a big deal,” Marshall said.

She glanced at him. “Why?”

“Do you really mean you can't see what my mother is doing?”

Her grin widened. “Oh, that. Marshall, have you considered that maybe Savannah and your mother just want to see you happy?”

“I am happy.”

“Hey, I'm not the one you have to convince,” Latiesha said, focusing on the road. “I'm just saying, you might want to consider the reason behind their actions. They love you. Especially Savannah. She's told me all sorts of things about you.”

Marshall stopped worrying about his mother's antics and gulped. “What kinds of things?”

Latiesha's eyes sparkled as she looked at him. “Oh, wouldn't you like to know?”

“Yes, actually, I would,” he said sourly.

“I thought the funniest thing was when she said you looked like the prince in Beauty and the Beast, except with short hair and not as smiley.
